PEAK experiences get a bad wrap I get why – a PEAK experiences get a bad wrap

I get why – a forced* peak experience is a lot of the time going to end up as a re-traumatising experience if the person having the peak experience has background trauma.

(...and interestingly people with background trauma are often seek out high arousal peak experiences)

* by forced I mean that the experience is instigated or compelled by someone or something external to them.

.

Yet, peak experience can be so utterly powerful, inspiring and transformative. Dare I say it...'life changing'.

I’ve experienced ‘glimpses’, really short peak experiences that have altered the course of my life and inform how I live and perceive the world every single day.

Moments I've had on the dance floor have fundamentally changed how I feel about my body and what I'm capable of in every instance since.
Some peak experience are like having a profound truth about existence revealed to you that you can never unsee, or unlearn.

.

So how do you have healthy, beneficial peak experiences?

.

1 – Instead of forcing something to happen, you CREATE THE CONDITIONS for it to naturally arise.
You can’t force an apple tree to produce an apple, but you can surround the tree with nutrient rich soil, water, optimal temperature and sunlight etc…then the tree will effectively do the most natural thing it’s destined to do…be fruitful

You're like that.
In the right conditions, you will innately flourish.

.

2 – You ensure that INTEGRATION follows a peak experience.
Instead of constantly chasing high's (inevitably followed by low's), integration allows you to bring the insights of your peak experience into your memory, both somatically and mentally.
Integration process allow you raise your baseline 'normal' settings and cultivate capacity so that overtime what was once a peak experience becomes your new 'normal' in your everyday waking state.
.
.
.
Sensual Embodied Dance™ is a methodology for creating the conditions for peak experiences to arise through movement.
I'm offering a live 3hr online experience this Sunday 12:30-3:30pm AEST - you're invited!

Whatever I do the responsibility is mine, But lik Whatever I do the responsibility is mine,
But like one who plants an orchard,
What comes of what I do, the fruit, will be for others
I offer the actions of this life to the God within,
And wherever I go the way is blessed.

- Lalla (Lalleshwari), Kashmiri Mystic Poetess (1320–1392)

A poem I’ve always loved and am holding dearly today as I share with the women in the facilitator training about the importance of cultivating devotion. Great facilitators use devotion to something greater to get out of their own way and be in a surrendered state of service to the people present, the moment, and the intelligent aliveness flowing through them.

I have loved in life and I have been loved. I hav I have loved in life and I have been loved.
I have drunk the bowl of poison from the hands of love as nectar,
and have been raised above life's joy and sorrow.
My heart, aflame in love, set afire every heart that came in touch with it.
My heart has been rent and joined again;
My heart has been broken and again made whole;
My heart has been wounded and healed again;
A thousand deaths my heart has died, and thanks be to love, it lives yet.

There seems two distinct temperaments when it come There seems two distinct temperaments when it comes to people who want to offer classes / workshops / retreats / or any kind of services for others...

1 - the throw themselves in, try stuff, make lots of mistakes, work it out as you go type.

and

2 - the 'I've got a bazillion certifications, trainings and skills' yet I just can't actually get started to implement the thing type.

I identify more with the first one.

My first 5 out of 10 years of teaching classes I was literally just trying different embodiment stuff out willy nilly. Experimenting.

Mixing discoveries from my own practice, with a page from a book I read, with a random storytelling class I took, and making 'a practice'.

Every single Wednesday. Almost all year round. Just having a go.

There was no 'trauma informed' anything back then outside actual therapy. I cringe in hindsight at how intensely I approached some exercises then, with good intent but so blind to how actual transformation happens.

It was 100% a trial and error process. Women who danced with me back then (many who I'm gratefully still connected with) can attest to the kind of weird and wonderful things we got up to.

Very slowly the methodology developed into something effective and repeatable.

My wish for the Sensual Embodied Dance™ Facilitator Training is to give those eager beaver, spontaneous (potentially reckless!) type people, like I was, a solid foundation of skills and an effective framework to shortcut all the trial and error, and ensure safety for their participants.

And for those who lean more towards the second type (who I hear often feel crippled by perfectionism) an understanding about their role as a facilitator, separate to who they are, that will grant them the confidence to simply begin.

In fact, all the women in the facilitator training will begin to offer classes (if they have that desire) even before completing their certification - because it's much easier to take the leap when you have a community supporting.

Do you relate to one of these types more or less?

Is there anything I could help you with?

I'd love to pass on any/all of the wisdom gained from my fumbling.

I used to roll my eyes when people wanted to talk I used to roll my eyes when people wanted to talk exclusively about the brain and mind in the self-development, transformation or spirituality arena

...NLP, mind-set, talk therapy, affirmations, all that heady 'change your thoughts, change your life' stuff never appealed much to me.

My own experience with embodiment and guiding others had shown me that was all very limited and only nice in theory unless you also bought the body and nervous system into the equation.

Unless you'd prefer to sit in a dark cave, alone and turn away from the senses for the rest of your life... you're going to need to acknowledge the powerful presence & pattens of your body and the uniqueness of the human experience when trying to move forward and actualise your potential.

These days I’m ravenously devouring everything I can about the brain and nervous system (which are really just one system). Modern neuroscience has recognised the mind-body divide as being more or less non-existent for years, yet so many mainstream beliefs, therapies and spiritual practices carry on without taking the body into account.

The research that's coming out of neuroscience labs recently around how to change your experience of emotional states, relationship to stress, courage, vulnerability, trauma, flow states and the role of the body in perception is INCREDIBLE.

(Especially exciting if you're a bit of a nerd like me!)

It has inspired a lot of how I operate in my own life,
how I facilitate transformative events for others
and now I've included applications of the science in the Sensual Embodied Dance™ Facilitator Training as a core component.

Understanding how the body adapts to new experiences, how and why people meet change differently gives a facilitator the great clarity to see what’s going on in a room and how to navigate a group and individuals towards positive outcomes.
